2012-12-22 CHROMEBOX has an up arrow

Argh!

It's signally that there is an update queue for the next restart.

Argh!

Not sure I want that.

Everything is working just fine.

But what choice does one have?

This is ANOTHER downside of the cloud based operating system: stability is not in the hands of the operator / owner.

It's like I can count on my toaster or microwave.

It can't be THAT complicated to have a stable computing platform that rarely if ever changes.

Argh!

I think I'm going back to my desire for a machine that boots from a cd. No virus can preserve it's state throught that particular "easy bake oven".

ARGH!

2012-12-21 Upgrade to 25 resets settings

Screws up XMARKS by syncing. Returns a bunch of empty folders in the bookmarks bar.

Reset settings not to sync bookmarks takes care of it.

That's one flaw with their model.

Low power wacks out wifi?

Ran the battery down and as it closed in on zero, the wifi failed to connect.

The public free wifi dropped. Giving the CHROMEBOOK a well know MIFI, no help.

Argh!

No warning. No nothing.

Argh!

Add wall power and back to normal!

BUFFER works nicely to fill FACEBOOK

I'm using the free version. I don't see ever paying for it.

It's nice to out my rants on FACEBOOK,

Wish there was an equivalent to fill my wordpress blogs. That would displace MARSEDIT.

--30--

Thursday, December 6, 2012

BUFFER now works on V23

May be a coincidence?

Before it wouldn't install, now it does.

Important to keep a list of problems so you can periodically can retry.

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Received an UP arrow!

The version 23 appeared soon after I griped about it.

Did the restart required. (Almost forgot how that takes you back to the "beginning". Appears all cookies are wiped and you have to tell FACEBOOK this is CHROMEBOOK.

Did the upsize offer with Google.

Wait ten minutes.

(Got bored so went and did something else.)

And, poof, it now reports that I have 105G of which 104.75 is free. (I don't trust files to just anyone.)

FWIW it works for me.

--30--

STILL on 21?

CHROMEBOOK works will with BLOGGER

The interface is fast and crisp.Certainly a step above WORDPRESS DOT COM.

--30--

Saturday, November 24, 2012

What's missing?

A decent text expansion utility like TEXTEXPANDER for MACOSX.

A decent Client for WORDPRESS DOT COM like MARSEDIT.

A decent clipboard manager.

Sorry, but CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK are not quite there yet imho as replacement for my MACBOOKAIR.

Battery life makes it a good tool

The battery life of the CHROMEBOOK makes it very useful for writing, email, and browsing. It gives hours of use on a single charge.

Interesting use

MINDMANGER has a cloud based component. (Assuming that you've stored your mindmaps there.)

Couldn't sleep. So I worked on a generic problem. (No security information disclosed. Just created a generic plan. I like generics because they really don't contain any great DIKW and certainly no specifics, but they do focus one's thinking.

Anyway, it worked well and cloud print did as well.

Need more cloud enabled tool to make CHROME (OS | BOOK | BOX) useful.

CHROMEBOOK: a finding

I keep looking at extension and rejecting them.

For example, the WordPress extension doesn't allow one to set the time on a blog post. Off to the no zip sorting bin.

For example, BUFFER allows queuing to social media, but not my blogs. I'd like that functionality. Off to the no zip sorting bin.

CHROME (OS | BOOK | BOX) is just not mature enough, with enough extensions, and web services to allow the user to be completely cloud based.

Still need that fat desktop with a big hard disk and sufficient apps of the correct functionality.

Maybe I have to go back to Microsloth? Argh! Or straight to Linux if the apps are there? Argh! Maybe a new Mac$$$? Argh!

SKYPE; not on CHROME platforms

CHROME platforms (CHROMEBOX | CHROMEBOOK | CHROMEOS)

Don't support SKYPE.

There are "alternatives": GOOGLEPLUSHANGOUT is number one.

CHROME (OS | BOX | BOOK) ng PORTABLEAPPS

Haven't used them in awhile. But playing with a USB fob and realized that the PORTABLEAPPS suite makes no sense with CHROME (OS | BOX | BOOK) since they require a WINDOZE platform to host them.

DUH!

Now the quest to find alternatives!

--30--

Off topic: BLOGGER versus WORDPRESS

One HUGE difference between BLOGGER and WORDPRESS is "tables".

In BLOGGER, you have to code it in HTML and tags and headers throw off your spacing.

In WORDPRESS, there's a menu choice and you can do WYSIWYG it.

I think that's big.

(I'll figure a work around. Cause I'm too lazy to do HTML!)

Criticism is mistaken

Interesting. At least two people -- my lawyer who reads my blog (hope he doesn't bill me for the effort) and one relative -- think that I'm "dissatisfied" with the CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK.

Let's be clear, it's far far from perfect. And, I'd only recommend it for every specific uses.

Perfect for international travel. Crossing borders; it can be "cleaned" effectively. Reset it to it's factory settings and there is nothing there. No forensic evidence of anything.

Perfect for old folks who want email and web surfing. No viruses. No settings to mess up. Nothing to backup. Nothing to screw up. Again, if it's "messed up" too badly. Quick simple factory reset.

Perfect for youngsters, as long as parents control the router (i.e., load OPENDNS; not your ISP's choice).

Perfect for students who attend a University that has embraced Google. (If they haven't, they they are throwing money down the drain. And, you're paying for it as a tuition payer or taxpayer.)

I have no doubt that this is the "thinnest" client I've ever seen since 3270 emulation.

As virtualization takes over both in biz and home, this is the way of the future. imho!

No malware! No "service packs". No end user arguments about desktop support.

I love the concept. The implementation has to mature. The web services have to evolve.

But, this is the future.

MIFIs

I have both the Verizon and ATT mifi offerings. (Don't ask! I use to be a highly compensated consultant. And, I'm too dumb to cut costs.)

CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK both work with these.

I have had problems connecting to free wifis for no good reasons.

But those two have always worked flawlessly.

Now I spend a lot of time in 08824 and 22102 so that may be sitting under both an ATT and Verison pop.

YMMV, just thought I should mention it.

As part of the collective DIKW (data, information, knowledge, wisdom)

fjohn

Need text expansion or a workaround for CHROMEBOOK

I keep coming back to the same problem.

I am extremely used to and dependent upon text expansion.

Painted myself into a corner on this one.

On the MACOSX TEXTEPANDER is a great utility.

(Their offering on the IPAD is nowhere nearly as good. Even for two bucks it's overpriced. Too limited with what it works with.)

This CHOMEBOOK and CHROMEBOX has no good TEXTEXAPNDER or CLIPMANGER that I've seen so far.

Being pushed back to Apple or Windoze

In doing my alumni news letter ezine, it's becoming apparent that the CHROMEBOOK will cost me extra time due to the lack of good tools.

(1) MARSEDIT allows me to easily post entries into the Jasper Jottings Daily blog. Working from WordPress's website takes longer.

(2) TEXTEXPANDER allows me to use my shorthand to create entries and write.

(3) BLUEGRIFFON builds my webpages.

(4) FILEZILLA posts them.

I don't think I can endure doing these the old fashioned web only way.

Like the IPAD, CHROMEBOOK is not suitable for content creation.

I bought in on the THIRD wave!  knew the fourth one was a month behind. There was no hint in the trade press. Argh! And, you can't tell until you drive the car for a while that it has flaws. imho. Besides it's only a 1K$ mistake. It's a mistake in my meme, because it's less than a year old. It's fine for mail and web browsing. Better than the IPAD imho. Just not for content creation. Not sure if I should go back to Apple or Microsoft.

New cheaper CHROMEBOOK

I've been "appled"!!!

---30---

Took the chrome book to a no wifi zone

Neither of my MIFIs would connect. Neither would IPAD3. Cell phones had signal; both BBerry on AT&T and my old samsung on Verizon.

CHROMEBOOK and CHROMEBOX really depend upon the inet always available.

It's the ultimate thin client of an in-office staff.

Wish I had some cytrix resources to play with.

I do have LOGMEINPRO to test with.

Cut 'n' paste don't work once you sign off

Wanted to create another user.

(For my alumni work.)

It's a random gmail with an even more random password.

No one knows it. Or uses it. Publicly I use addresses off my own domain which forward to hidden gmail accounts. This way I keep control of the "name" space; not comcast, verison, cox, att, yahoo, gmail, hotmail, or apple.

There appears to be no way to "batch load" users.

Interesting!

That wouldn't work for corporate america. Where zero administration is the goal.

--30--

CHROMEBOOK: Big black toolbar is back

Put up another user on the CHROMEBOOK. My alumni news user id.

Magically, the problem I had with CHROMEBOX where the READER window had a big black bar that obscures the choices.

I forget what I did on CHROMEBOX to fix it.

CHROMEBOX locked up

A power down and back up again brought the "green screen of death".

An "old" recovery usb drive was applied. But it appeared to end in failure.

A restart makes it appear to work.

When I went to my windoze box to get an up to date recovery image for the usb, the download has v2 in the name.

When I run it, it prompts for "the model number of my Chrome OS device". I don't know it.

Argh!

This is supposed to be brain dead simple. It ain't.

Not ready for prime time.

Wonder if I can put UBUNTU on the CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK?

Argh!

Haven't found a good clipboard utility

On the MACBOOKAIR, I use CLIPMENU.

It's value to me is the ability to go back over the last 100 cuts.

I feel like I'm at work were their interesting security policy forbids virtually any non-Microsoft utility.

One big strike for CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK is the absence of the equivalent.

Anyone know of one?

--30--

CHROMEBOOK did my headset OK

Had an old Logitech USB headset. Wanted to listen to a webcast in the office. Never tried it with the CHROMEBOOK. Plugged it it.

And, it worked. No config. No drivers. No nothing. It just worked.

Excellent!

A thin platform needs fat services?

interesting?

If the platform is the "ultimate" in thinness(?), my IPAD host more software and data than does the CHROMEBOX and CHROMEBOOK, so those platforms are "thin".

So to make CHROMEBOX / CHROMEBOOK most "effective" does it need websites that host "fat" applications. Like video editing, databases, and other such.

Corporate IT is looking at CYTRIX solutions to put "heavy" app on sharable resources. So that's kinda like the same solution.

Hmmm, is LOGMEIN the same type of functionality?

SO what would a business model offer and how do they charge? And, collect?

--30--

Monday, October 8, 2012

loaned my chromebook to Luddite

It was interesting. "Where's the mail app?" "Chrome"

"where is ..."

Chrome.

He didn't get the hang of the Samsung's trackpad mouse and he wasn't used to "gestures".

By the end ot the week end, while not a "fan", he like the light weight and zero complexity.

He loved the guest feature.

blundering around between box and book

In playing around, with that PDF that wouldn't display on my ex-niece-in-law's ipad3 in NJ, while displaying different things on different platforms.

I found that <CNTL><M> displays the (CHROMEOS)? (file system)?????

On the CHROMEBOOK, it just shows the download directory.

On the CHROMEBOX, it shows both the download directory and the GDRIVE.

Why the difference?

For another night, I was only playing around while watching the Yankees clinch. (Yeah, I know millionaires playing for billionaires.)

TBD?

--30--

PDF confusion

Been working with some PDF forms to fill out for my broker. Interesting. Couldn't fill them out on the MacBookAir. Went to the ChromeBox and it was fine. Had Print problems. (Wet ware problem?) Just went back to the MacBookAir and printed.

Today. Need to update them. Did it on the Chromebook. Start to finish.

Very neat.

Hello World

Having decided to leave the Microsoft problem space, I tried Apple. Recently, Apple obsoleted my original MacBook Air. Same treadmill; different vendor.

I tested the water with a ChromeBox. I found it useful and handy. Guests liked it. I liked it.

My MacBookAir then developed a hardware problem with its trackpad. I suspect it's hardware because it works relatively fine with a wireless mouse.

Now if I take it to Apple to get fixed at their rates, ain't worth it. Sooo, I bit the bullet.

The Chomebook arrived from Amazon today. Setup was just popping it out of the box and plugging it in.

The battery fully recharged in less than 2 hours.

Some folks expressed an interest in my experience. Hence this blog.

Because of the ChomeBox, there were no real surprises. Chrome came up and, after authenticating, all the settings were transferred.

The Chromebook trackpad doesn't have the standard two buttons. A little getting used to is required.

More when I find it.
